Philippine News: Yahoo gives top post to Filipino

Yahoo Southeast Asia has appointed a Filipino to a key position in its regional office in Hong Kong. Yahoo! Southeast Asia announced the appointment of Joselito Jojo Anonuevo as senior director for business development.

Anonuevo will be filling in a newly-created role for the regional team, whose mail goal is to oversee Yahoo!’s strategic partnerships across Southeast Asia.

Philippine News: Despite ban, 6,647 OFWs slip into Iraq to work

Filipino overseas workers are being deployed in Iraq in violation of the continuing ban, the country’s special envoy to the Middle East Ambassador Roy Cimatu said Sept. 20. Cimatu told a Senate hearing that 6,647 Filipino migrant workers are still in Iraq amid offers from the Philippine government to repatriate them. Cimatu said Filipino workers are being brought to Iraq through Dubai and Kuwait with their consent accompanied by their employers using chartered planes.

Philippine News: Another $400-M contract probed

Education Secretary Jesli Lapus says the country could ill-afford to lose the $400 million (P26.4 billion) Cyber Education Project (CEP) undertaken by his department as it will help improve the quality of education. He said CEP would address “completely” the fundamental problem of resource gap and will help in delivering good quality education for all.

Philippine News: Campbell's mom to aid Banaue

BANAUE – Mrs. Linda Campbell, the mother of slain US Peace Corps volunteer Julia Campbell, has pledged support for the put up of a tourism information center in Banaue, Ifugao. Banaue Mayor Lino Madchino said the family of the late Peace Corps volunteer vowed they would help the local government in putting up the information center, where a marker dedicated to the late Campbell would also be set.

Filipino teachers are highly esteemed abroad and are paid up to 10 times their salaries here. To curb this trend, bills have been filed in Congress seeking to upgrade the salary rates of teachers. However, the proposed rates still pale in comparison with the salary offers overseas.

Philippine News: US helps fix Botong?s murals

The US embassy is helping the National Museum restore the four murals of National Artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco in the lobby of the Philippine General Hospital. “They were very weak, very deteriorated. If nobody noticed it, they will collapse sooner or later,” said Willie Estonato, a painting conservator from the National Museum. The priceless oil paintings by Botong, a popular muralist from Angono, Rizal, depicted the different periods in the history of Philippine Medicine — from the pre-colonial period, all throughout the Spanish and American invasions to the modern era.

Philippine News: Top elementary tutors selected

The Metrobank Foundation has named the country’s outstanding teachers for 2007. Named as the outstanding elementary school teachers were Ateneo de Manila grade school teacher Fredo Laureles; public school teachers Jeneluj Cunanan of Lanao Central Elementary School in Kidapawan City; Madeline Rivera of San Pablo Central School in San Pablo City, Laguna; and Leticia Palle of Malaybalay City Central School in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon.

Philippine News: Pinoys 2nd top Asian smokers

Filipinos rank second among the 125.8 million adult smokers in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), according to a study.

Indonesians placed first at 46.16 percent, followed by Filipinos at 16.62 percent, and the Vietnamese at 14.11 percent, the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) said. Burmese are fourth (8.73 percent), followed by Thais (7.74 percent), Malaysians (2.90 percent), Cambodians (2.07 percent), Laotians (1.23 percent) and Singaporeans (0.04 percent).

Philippine News: Arroyo allots P30-M to refurbish image abroad

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has earmarked P30 million for the International Media Office that will have the main task of refurbishing the country's image abroad and relaying government message to foreign press organizations. The President, who in at least two previous occasions lamented the lack of good news reporting on the part of the local media, said the IMO will help solve the country’s "perception problem" abroad.
