Top Stories: North America Cagefest in VA Sept. 1

The Filipino Basketball Association of North America (FBA-NA) will stage its third annual Labor Day tournament in Chantilly, Virginia on September 1st and 2nd.  The Filipino-American Basketball Association of Metropolitan DC, Inc (FABA-DC Metro) will host the event.  

FABA DC-Metro is expecting more than 80 teams coming from the United States (Chicago, Glendale Heights, IL, Houston and Washington, DC) and Canada (Toronto, Montreal, Windsor, Winnipeg, Mississauga, and Vaughan).  A possible 11th team from FABL from Montgomery County, Maryland may join the tournament.



FABA-DC Metro is expecting to host over 3,000 or more guests, including players, family members, friends and officials in one of the largest assemblage of Filipino/American basketball players in North America

The tournament will be divided into 10 different divisions: Tykes (ages 10 & under); PeeWee (ages 11-12); Bantam (ages 13 to 14); Midget (ages 15-16), Juvenile (ages 17-19), Men’s Open, Senior (ages 32 & over), Master (ages 42 & over); Ladies’ Open; and Girls (ages 16 & under) Divisions. Games will be held at HoopMagic Sports Academy in Chantilly and tentatively at Centerville High School.

Meanwhile, division teams from FABA-DC Metro that will represent Washington, DC have started their rigorous practices in preparation for the big event. “We have to work hard to get our teams to be in the final games and eventually win championships”, said Ken Mendoza, the FBA-NA tournament director and president of FABA DC-Metro.

“We have been playing all year, now is the time to bring our games into the next level,” said Mendoza, referring to the just concluded FABA-DC Metro’s Spring Youth Basketball League that features tykes, peewee, midget and bantam games.

Games among the Men’s Open and Senior Divisions are now ongoing at South County Middle School in Lorton, Virginia. For more information, go to http://www.tunaynapinoy.com/faba_dcmetro.

FABA is currently hosting the 3- point shooting contest which started June 16 and will last all the way to the OPEN championship game (TBA) where the final four will shoot it out during the halftime of the aforementioned game. Anyone can participate from Peewee all the way to Master players. The 12 highest scorers will advance to the semi finals, then the final four.

The champion will get a trophy and a $50 gift certificate. The 2nd place winner will get a $30 gift certificate, the 3rd place and 4th place will get a $20 gift certificate.

The registration fee is $10.00. Participant will get 25 shots altogether, 5 shots in each different angle on the court. Anyone can register starting on the 16th of June 2007 at Bishop O Connell High School at Arlington, Virginia and will take signers all the way to the end of regular season games of the adult league. Every participant will shoot their 25 shots during the halftime of any games starting on the 11th Youth Play-off games all the way to the last game of the OPEN/35 over regular season games. It will depends on how many players will participate and anyone can sign up as much as you can to improve your score. This is open to everybody.

Meanwhile, PABA of Metropolitan DC, Inc. announced the recent winners in the Spring/Summer Youth Basketball League. They are Columbia Pike Shell, FABA 2007 Champion Bantam Midget Division; Valera & Assoc. 2nd Runner Up; World Financial Group, Champion Peewee Division; Radiant Inc , 2nd Place; Caliguiran Real Estate, Champion Tykes Division; BMW Sterling, 2nd Place.
