Top Stories: Garcias? extradition set

MANILA – The Philippines will avail of the extradition treaty with the US to chase down the wife and three sons of former Armed Forces comptroller Carlos Garcia, in connection with the P303.27 million plunder case filed against them in court.

The Sandiganbayan Second Division has ordered the arrest of Garcia’s wife and sons and recommended no bail. Sandiganbayan sheriff Edgardo Urieta said the warrants of arrest for Clarita Depakakibo Garcia and the general’s sons Ian Carl, Juan Paulo and Timothy Mark would be served to their last known address in Iloilo.

Urieta said he had received information that Clarita and Ian Carl are still in the country while Juan Paulo and Timothy Mark are abroad. The Sandiganbayan has charged Garcia’s wife and children for allegedly helping the retired general conceal his ill-gotten wealth.

Later, the immigration bureau put Garcia’s wife and sons on the hold departure list to prevent them from leaving if they are still in the Philippines. Malacanang used the Garcia plunder case as a warning to corrupt officials and their families. Presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said the decision of the court on Garcia’s plunder case should “serve as a warning to corrupt officials and to their families that public funds are meant to serve the people and not to the pockets of a few.”

Last year, a general courtmartial sentenced Garcia to two years of hard labor after he was found guilty of plunder. His alleged ill-gotten wealth includes at
least 41 bank accounts, a P42.8 million Trump Park Avenue condominium in New York, a $750,000 condominium unit at 222 East 34th St. also in New York, a house
at 625 Vancouver Drive, Westerville, Ohio and the $100,000 in cash seized from Garcia’s sons Ian Carl and Juan Paolo at the San Francisco Airport in December 2003.

The Garcia family also has a fleet of expensive vehicles, including 1995 Toyota Truck bus, a 1995 Isuzu Elf truck, a 2003 Honda CRV, a 1997 Honda Civic, a 1997
Mitsubishi L-300 van, a 2001 Toyota Rav 4, a 1998 Toyota Hi-Lux and a 1983 Toyota sedan. Garcia is detained at Camp Crame, the Philippine National Police
(PNP) general headquarters, after he was dishonorably
