will display an ethnic festival showcasing the best in Philippine culture
through the dance, music and art and the fair will focus on exotic cuisine, handicrafts,
and a cultural show. The parade will be held along Pennsylvania Avenue, between 3rd and 7th
Streets, NW, Washington, DC.

-A Salute to Filipino American Men and
Women in the U.S. Military Friday, June 9, 2006, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Lester
Hall, S. Dillon Ripley Center, Smithsonian Institution.From the Navy to the
Army, Marines, Coast Guard, and the Air Force, Filipinos and Filipino Americans
have been members of the U.S. military as early as the 1920s. This public
program will discuss the politics and
policies that made the recruitment of Filipinos and Filipino Americans to the U.S. military possible and the many challenges
they encountered within the ranks as Filipinos and U.S. citizens in the U.S. Armed
Forces. This public program will also feature two noted Filipino American
photojournalists and their images of Filipinos and Filipino Americans in the
military.

Filipino American children’s book authors/illustrators will delight audiences,
young and old, with storytelling and readings. Book illustrator Jose
Aruego (Milton the Early, Herman the Helper) will explore the humorous animal
characters from his books and Almira Astudillo Gilles will do the reading from
her latest work Willie Wins, an endearing story of a Filipino American father
and son and their love of baseball.

This program deals with the challenges
faced by immigrants who came after the Immigration Act of 1965 as they settled
in the United States.
Post-1965 Filipino immigrants, including doctors, nurses, and other overseas
workers, faced different challenges from the first wave of immigrants.
Panelists will also discuss community and political empowerment, multi-racial
issues, social and community activism, and youth issues.
Creativity of Filipino Americans in
Video, Film, and Cinema Friday, October 20, 2006 , 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm Baird
Auditorium, National Museum of Natural History 10th St. and Constitution Ave.,
N.W. World premiere of Sandaan, a documentary created for the Filipino American
Centennial by Sonny Izon. This public program provides a visual history of
Filipino Americans and their crucial contributions to this country in
filmmaking. The program will conclude with a tribute to two pioneering
filmmakers: Linda Mabalot and Chris Gatchalian.Filipino American Literary
Writers (December) NVM Gonzales, Bienvenido Santos, and Jose Garcia Villa are
examples of Filipino Americans renowned as among the best writers in the world.
In this public program, contemporary Filipino American writers talk about their
inspirations and their impact on American literature.
