Ten teams currently entered in the 2005 Filipino American Men’s Franchise Summer Basketball League begin their final quest for the ultimate prize when the three month old league championship round gets underway at the Thurgood Marshall Middle School at Brinkley Road, Temple Hills, Maryland on Sunday, Septembe18, 2005.
All teams regardless of their elimination round standings qualify for the title round The format of the tournament calls for the elimination round top team to play the 10th<D> placer while the number two team meets the 9th<D> placer and so on down the line. This gives the weaker teams an outside chance of achieving the difficult and improbable task of defeating the top rank teams.
Keen basketball observers believe that this format prevents the teams with the worse win-loss records from forfeiting their last scheduled regular games once they realize that they have lost any hopes of getting a shot at the crown and bagging the title. Many teams actually do this the moment they begin to slide down towards the bottom rungs, creating a nightmare for organizers of the league.
The league is sponsored and coordinated by the Sports and Permit Division, Prince George County Department of Parks and Recreation, M-NCPPC, under Program Coordinators Mr. John Love and Gregory Robertson.
The ten teams are YOUNG GUNS, DEAUSEN REALTORS, GOODFELLAS, KINGSTOWNE AUTO CARE, TROJANS, SQUAD, DYNASTY, BULLDAWGS, ALL STARS and WARRIORS.
Participation in this year’s league at ten teams has improved somewhat from its peak of fourteen teams a few years back. Participation dwindled to just eight teams after the league was widely criticized when its referees did nothing to stop a brawl that broke out during a title game injuring several players including two from the Manila Mail team.

Jubilation once again swept over our sports loving folks as news filtered home that two of our boxers have captured two gold medals in international competitions.
Harry Tanamor and Joan Tipon both won convincing final round victories at the conclusion of the 23rd<D> Senior Asian Boxing Championships at the Pan Dinh Phun Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam early this month, Tanamor’s victory made it all the more sweeter for him as he avenged a loss against a Korean boxer who frustrated him during the Athens Olympics.
Bantamweight Tipon made mincemeat of a tough Mongolian pugilist who won a silver in the last Asian games. Tipon’s brilliant performance earned him the Best Boxer of the Tournament trophy in the tournament that had a cast of 145 boxers from 20 countries.

A Strong Community Spirit seems to be the end product of the various programs put up by Filipino American tennis Association of Northern Virginia (FilAm Tennis of NV) in cooperation with the Filipino American Tennis Association of Maryland (FATAM).
To be sure both groups were formed to propagate the sport of recreational tennis for Filipino Americans in the Metro DC area. In the process they have proven to be a strong force not only in uniting the various tennis groups among Fil-Ams but also among other ethnic groups like the Koreans, Thailanders, Vietnamese, and Chinese.
Filam Tennis really got going when the Tsunami disaster struck early this year. Filam Tennis immediately got together with their Thai counterparts in conjunction with other Asian groups and converted a then scheduled dual meet into a fund raising event for the Tsunami victims. The project was a study in unity and cooperation among the different ethnic groups.
Since then, Filam Tennis sponsored among others projects like youth training and development, the Asian Games meet in May, the RP Independence Tournament in June. It has also sponsored tennis meets among alumni of the different schools and universities, etc., etc. All of these had the effect of bringing the community closer. Congratulations to organizers Ed Tiong and Danny Francia and the many nameless others who donated their time, their talents and treasure.

Basketball is definitely out of the SEAG Games which the Philippines is hosting in November this year a victim of the intramurals among our sports leaders. Much to the dismay and disappointment of basketball loving Filipinos, FIBA has barred the Philippines from conducting and or participating in international meets.
Well a ray of hope, has gleamed that may yet appease the anger of our kababayans and restore basketball competitions in the SEA Games. The BAP has reached out to its main rival the Philippine Olympic Committee.
To enable the Philippines to participate in the Southeast Asian Games and defend its basketball crown, the Basketball Association of the Philippines will again request the Philippine Olympic Committee to reconsider its expulsion of the 70-year-old national sports association from its fold. Will POC agree? As as a newly transplanted kababayan who has yet to perfect his English said : “Let us to see.”
