Philippine News: Islamic bank account frozen

The Court of Appeals froze this month the bank accounts of the International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO), which is suspected of being used to fund the activities of al-Qaeda-linked groups such as the Abu Sayyaf.

Philippine News: Moonlighting PAF pilots

Three more Air Force pilots are facing a court-martial over allegations that they moonlighted as pilots for commercial airlines, the Air Force spokesman said. Maj. Augusto de la Pe±a said the pilots, who all have the rank of captain, were being investigated in preparation for court proceedings.

U.S. News: Filam Alliance group formed

NEW YORK CITY- Around 350 Filipino-Americans converged in Queens this city over the weekend to attend a two-day national conference of Filipino-American organizations and launch a U.S.-wide alliance that would address the various issues affecting the Filipino-American community. Some 30 organizations from 24 cities all over the U.S. attended the conference held at the Kalayaan Auditorium of the Philippine Forum in Elmhurst, Queens. Of the participants, 30 came from outside New York and New Jersey.

Philippine News: Waivers doesn't save doctors

Waivers by patients won't reduce a hospital's liability for medical malpractice, the Supreme Court ruled recently. The Court verdict ended a 20-year battle for justice by the family of Corazon Nogales, a pregnant woman who died of hemorrhage on May 25, 1976, under the care of the Capitol Medical Center (CMC). The 27-page decision of the Supreme Court 3rd Division judged the hospital equally liable as its resident doctor, Oscar Estrada.
