U.S. News: UN says 100,000 displaced in RP

UNITED NATIONS – An estimated 100,000 people were displaced from their homes in the Philippines during 2006 as a result of armed conflict and human right abuses," the United Nations said this month.

It said the main displacement movements occurred in the southernmost island of Mindanao where, in two separate incidents, close to 70,000 people were forced from their homes in Maguindanao province following clashes between Muslim separatist rebels and security forces. It added that in "addition to these new displacements, which have been mainly temporary, tens of thousands of people were unable to return or are living in situations akin to displacement due to previous conflicts.’ It said the exact number of displacements cannot be figured accurately because of the frequent clashes and the fluidity of the situation.

Tech Tips & Updates: Step Away From The Computer Before You Have A Mental Meltdown

Step Away From The Computer Before You Have A Mental Meltdown!

Do I Read A Technical Manual Tonight, or The Lord Of The Rings?
----------------------------
Just out of courtesy, I think I should tell you that the following article is about as far from my typical writings as I can get. Quite frankly, it is nothing more than a very tired technology guy ranting and raving. Maybe a little wining too.

My entire world is about technology; computers, data communication, wireless and wired Ethernet, PDA's, mobile devices, firewalls, security assessments, and on and on and on. I'm so addicted to technology and business that I have trouble deciding whether to read a technical manual or a good sci-fi / fantasy novel.

Tech Tips & Updates: What is a Virus?

Most viruses are written with a malicious intent, so that they can cause damage to programs and data in addition to spreading themselves. Viruses infect existing programs to alter the behavior of programs, actively destroy data, and perform actions on storage devices that render their stored data inaccessible.

Computer viruses attack the software of a computer such as operating systems, data files, application software, and e-mails. However, viruses do not affect the computer hardware.

Viruses infect computers and spread themselves using various methods. Some viruses attach themselves to a common program such as a popular game or word processor. When a person downloads the infected game and runs it, the attached virus program gets executed. The virus then loads itself into memory and searches for any other program on the disk. If the virus finds any program, it modifies the program by adding the malicious code to the program. The next time this program gets executed, it infects other programs, and the cycle continues thereafter.

Philippine News: Siguijor, the mystic island

SIQUIJOR = The Spaniards who colonized the archipelago more than 300 years ago called it Isla del Fuego (Island of Fire) because of the eerie glow cast by millions of fireflies that swarmed around the molave trees at night.
Feared by many Filipinos for its sorcerers, known locally as mambabarang, the island has also earned a reputation for the apparently incredible powers of its local healers, or mananambal.

Philippine News: Bulusan continues spewing ash

LEGAZPI CITY – Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon continued to spew ash for the third day yesterday, but volcanologists noted a decrease in magnitude, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

Scientists were not able to observe the height of direction of the ash explosion because of the thick clouds covering the volcano’s summit.
Bella Tubianosa, head of the team monitoring the volcano, said their seismic network recorded only one high-frequency volcanic quake over the past 24 hours.
