Entertainment: Summer of '42

Bethesda, MD. Round House Theatre closes its 2006/2007 season with “Summer Of ‘42,” a charming new musical based on the coming-of-age novel and film that became cultural icons of the 1970s. Adapted for the stage by noted Broadway actor, Hunter Foster and David Kirshenbaum, it tells the story of three teenagers struggling to lose their innocence as they spend the summer of 1942 on an island beach off the New England Coast.

Directed by Meredith McDonough, “Summer Of ‘42" sheds new light on the important lessons of life, love and the scope of human compassion.

Head Strike: Mi Amicus

When I left the portals of Recoletos Seminary in Baguio City, never did it occur in my mind that I would see my classmates again. I personally cut my communications with them because I totally lost control of my spirituality. I started reading pure philosophy and left my spiritual books in the shelves to accumulate dust. Farther, I almost got into the summit of desperation and frustration when my mother died of brain tumor. I isolated myself from the practice of religion and hated the idea of being alone. I am too angry and afraid to confront my "being" and the core of my existence. While doing my doctorate and law at the same time (although I did not finish both because I decided to immigrate to the U.S.), I became the master of vice and promiscuity. Many sleepless nights have been wasted in drinking, bar mania and smoking until the lust of the flesh and worldly attractions has come to the peak of its saturation where the "kiss of death" was almost inevitable.

Top Stories: Asians Push for Family Unification

WASHINGTON D.C. – The Senate June 7 put on hold the controversial compromise immigration reform bill after more than two weeks of deliberation.
As a result of the stalemate, the Filipino American veterans unification amendment and legalization of thousands of Filipinos along with millions who are illegally in the United States have been placed in jeopardy. The failure of the Senate to approve the bill has also put on hold the Senate’s determination to limit family-based immigration visas to spouses and minor children. The Senate earlier defeated an amendment of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) to retain the old provision on family unity which allows citizens and permanent residents to also petition for their parents and married brothers and sisters.

Our Town: This is Our Day

And so it rained. Not just for an hour, but throughout the day. Not just intermittent showers but heavy downpours that forced people into crowded tents, some shivering in sleeveless tops and summer shirts.

Yet cloudy skies and chilly winds failed to dampen the daring spirit of the hundreds who came on that first Sunday of June. As scheduled, the Philippine Festival went on. And they came, some with umbrellas and raincoats but many more just soaked it all up with a cavalier grin. Wet brings out the Pinoys at their best. Dry is not us.

Hobbies: Camera Shake and Image Stabilization (vibration Reduction)

When you are first buying camera equipment you see a lot of lenses that have the IS or VR designations on them. This is Image Stabilization or Vibration Reduction. They mean the same thing except Canon uses the first term and Nikon uses the second. These are mechanisms built into the camera lens to prevent "camera shake". I will discuss how to get rid of camera shake and why I purchased a VR lens for myself.

Editorial: Scrap overseas voting?

Several years ago, Filipino American groups in the United States, including Washington D.C., launched a campaign to empower overseas Filipinos. They even dispatched “lobbyists” to contact members of Congress and urge them to implement a provision in the 1987 Constitution giving overseas Filipinos the right to vote in Philippine elections.

Articles/Stories: Successful Counters to Terror -2

WASHINGTON D.C.- The hope created by the program, nearing its fifth anniversary, is credited with assisting the local community in building and holding peace in the volatile southernmost region of the Philippines, near Indonesia and Malaysia. The peace continues to hold in the DPIS project areas despite heavy military activity by US-trained Philippine forces in the surrounding area. Still, due to instability, the need for enhanced development persists. Recently, Manila- based Habitat for Humanity and the Filipino Gawad Kalinga organizations have offered to assist AAI in building homes in Jolo and Indanan Peace Zones. That, however, will require additional fundraising.

Nestor Mata: A rejection of Gloria

MANILA-When President Arroyo boasted before Japanese officials in Tokyo recently that we Filipinos live in “a lively democracy,” I almost burst out laughing. How ludicrous! She was the one who trampled on our democratic principles and institutions. She was lying, again!

Just as laughable was the remark of a visiting American diplomat of the US State Department about the just concluded mid-term elections. “I know there has been some violence," he blurted out. “But I would say overall the elections have been very successful. The Philippines has a very well-developed democracy."

Kutitap: THE GALA BALL

It was a joyous event for the Filipino Americans on June 2, 2007 at the JW Marriott in Washington, D.C. Many attendees expressed their congratulations for a successful celebration of the Philippine Independence. They arrived in their formal evening attire looking special, blending in with the elegance of the ballroom. We received wonderful compliments on the exceptional gourmet menu that we selected, Crab Cake, Steak and Fish – the trio served on each plate. The guests enjoyed dancing with the lively music by D’Originals. It was an evening of pure enjoyment - fine dining and elegance of the ballroom, lively music, entertaining dance presentation, and a well prepared program.

Articles/Stories: RP ranked among least peaceful countries in world

WASHINGTON - With about 300 people reported killed or injured in the run-up to the May 14 elections, it comes as no surprise that the Philippines is rated among the least peaceful countries in the world.
A Global Peace Index compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked the Philippines in 100th place out of 121 nations studied according to their peacefulness. The EIU study, the first of its kind, measured countries’ peacefulness based on 24 indicators including ease of access to “weapons of minor destruction" (guns, small explosives), military expenditure, local corruption and level of respect for human rights.
“This is a wake-up call for leaders around the globe,” said Steve Killelea, who commissioned the study from the Economist Intelligence Unit, which is linked to the news weekly The Economist.
