Washington Tsismis: Welcome, Willy

Goodbye Albert, Welcome Willy. Some superstitious tsismoso fans have called my attention to the names of the incoming and outgoing ambassadors. This is what they said: “The family name of the outgoing ambassador is Del Rosario which contains 10 letters and that of the incoming is Gaa with three letters. The first letter of the first name of the new ambassador is W for Willy and that of the outgoing envoy is A for Albert. This difference means that Ambassador Gaa will only stay for a short time.” My subjects, good observation, wrong prediction. Remember, “What Gloria Wants, Gloria Gets.”

Washington Tsismis: It?s Gaa!

Philippine newspapers say President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has appointed Ambassador Willy Gaa, currently the consul general in Los Angeles, to be the “temporary” ambassador (in diplomatic language, charge d’affaires) to the U.S., vice Ambassador Albert del Rosario.

Other names are also being mentioned as among those to be appointed “permanent” ambassador, if there is such a thing in diplomacy.

The question now is: What will happen to DCM (deputy chief of mission) Evan “The Sphinx” Garcia? (He is called the Sphinx because he rarely, if ever, returns phone calls from the community.) Some tsismosos think his wife, Minister Jocelyn Garcia, who is his commander in chief and is now in Manila, will have him recalled in the interest of family unity.

Washington Tsismis: An outraged community

The Filipino American community is seething! It is angry at the way Philippine Ambassador Albert del Rosario was fired, not resigned as claimed by Malacanang.

This  was apparent during the Pitoy Moreno fashion show at the Ritz Carlton in Washington D.C. June 17, according to those who attended it.

“When Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo praised the community for their dollar remittances to the Philippines, the crowd clapped loudly. When he said he was also bringing with him the greetings of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to community, it was met with silence and some boos,” they said. “Even Ambassador John Negroponte, the National Intelligence chie, expressed surprise that the ambassador was being recalled.”

Washington Tsismis: Peace talks

The separate celebrations of the Philippine festival and the centennial of Filipino immigration to the United States by the Philippine Festival Committee and a newly-formed group called the Migrant Heritage Commission does not augur well for the unity of the community. For the first time in history in this area, these two groups are vying or have already upstaged each other in getting the support of various business establishments and community groups to their celebrations.

Washington Tsismis: What?s wrong with the Mail?

Does the editorial writer of the Manila Mail know what is happening in the community? This question was raised by an angry reader over the April 30 editorial on the centennial. I am wondering why, instead of directing the letter to the editor, it was coursed to Tsismoso. Probably, because the editorial is my neighbor on the left.

Washington Tsismis: Kawawa si Ambassador

A columnist of The Malaya newspaper, an anti-Arroyo newspaper in Manila, says advisers of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo are blaming Ambassador Albert del Rosario in Washington D.C. for failing to stop the New York Times from publishing its April 5 editorial on the Philippines.

Ellen Tordesillas, the columnist, quoted Malacanang source as saying: “Ambassador Albert del Rosario will finally get his wish of returning to the private sector where he earns much more than what the Philippine government is paying him now.

Washington Tsismis: Anak ng galas

Ala eh, dalawa mang git ang gala ball sa June 10! Caught in the middle is Philippine Ambassador Albert del Rosario who has reportedly accepted the invitations of both galas on the same date, same time but different hotels...

Washington Tsismis: A hidden message?

The Philippine Ambassador to the US Albert del Rosario on Feb. 20, 2006
published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer an article about his involvement in a
demonstration against dictator Marcos in 1986. Titled the ‘Demonstration that
Never was,’ the ambassador recalled how he was about to lead a demonstration by
a group of Filipinos who graduated from US schools to the US embassy to call for
withdrawal of US support to Marcos.

Washington Tsismis: The envoy as apologist

According to some guests who attended the reception in the Philippine embassy to mark the 20th anniversary of People Power last month, the money spent should have been channeled to the fundraising campaign of the embassy itself for the victims of the mudslides in southern Leyte.
