Articles/Stories: ABS-CBN seeks Gawad nominations

REDWOOD SHORES, California - ABS-CBN Global North America, the U.S.-based subsidiary of ABS-CBN Broadcasting, the Philippines? largest entertainment and broadcasting company, announced last January 15 its search for its Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipino sa America 2007.

This year, the criteria for the award will be much broader in scope. A new category has been created: the Outstanding Bayanihan Award (Spirit of Cooperation). It will focus on corporations, institutions and services that have contributed significantly to the well-being of the Filipino community in the U.S. or in the Philippines.

The new Outstanding Bayanihan Award category was created to give the spirit of bayanihan a face.  This award also honors Filipinos residing

in the U.S. - or American citizens of Filipino ancestry -who continue to remember their roots through selfless public service for their less fortunate Filipino brothers and sisters.

The Outstanding Bayanihan Award shall be conferred on a program or service that is either ongoing or a project that had been completed by June 2006 through communal effort in the bayanihan spirit.  This program, project or service should have a measurable impact on a sector or community in the Philippines or in overseas Filipino communities like in the U.S.

The Bayaning Pilipino Awards was born in the Philippines in 1994 when the late philanthropist and then ABS-CBN Chairman Don Eugenio “Geny” Lopez Jr. and Fr. Nilo Tanalega, S.J. of Ugnayan at Tulong para sa Maralitang Pilipino (UGAT) Foundation agreed to conceptualize a project geared towards recognizing unsung Filipino heroes.

Raffy Lopez, ABS-CBN Global COO and Managing Director for North America, has described Bayaning Pilipino nominees as ‘unsung heroes of the Filipino-American community (who) embody all that is good about humanity and inspire Americans of all types.’

The deadline of submission of nominations is on March 30, 2007. For the criteria and nomination forms, please visit: http://www.abs-cbni.com/bayaningpilipino2007/index.html.

Entries may be sent to: Bayaning Pilipino Awards UGAT Foundation, Inc.
