Victory and Defeat. Folks back home rejoiced at the news that Brian Viloria was victorious in defending his WBC Mini-Flyweight boxing crown against Jose Antonio Aguirre of Mexico at the Alladin Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas last weekend which greatly lifted their spirits after learning that Jennifer Rosales lost her golfing crown when she withdrew in the second round of the LPGA SBS Open in Hawaii and Dorothy Delasin missed the cut leaving the Philippines empty handed in the golfing event.
Although there was no knockout this time, the result was the same. Fil-Am Brian Viloria used his speed and punching power to score a unanimous decision win over Jose Antonio Aguirre of Mexico to retain his World Boxing Council (WBC) mini flyweight title in mid February at the Alladin Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Viloria, called the “Hawaiian Punch”, had a slow start but began to explode with powerful combinations in the later rounds to successfully defend for the first time the crown he wrested from another Mexican, Eric Ortiz.
Viloria was sensational when he took the title from Ortiz in September, scoring a first-round KO with his deadly right hand. Against Aguirre, Viloria didn’t find the one big punch he displayed against Ortiz. His excellent jabs and counter-punching were the big difference, though. He remains undefeated.
