Filipinos rank second among the 125.8 million adult smokers in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), according to a study.
Indonesians placed first at 46.16 percent, followed by Filipinos at 16.62 percent, and the Vietnamese at 14.11 percent, the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) said. Burmese are fourth (8.73 percent), followed by Thais (7.74 percent), Malaysians (2.90 percent), Cambodians (2.07 percent), Laotians (1.23 percent) and Singaporeans (0.04 percent).
The
study did not say how it got the figures. The Philippines, Indonesia
and Laos have no government staff working full-time on tobacco
control, according to the study. On the other hand, Malaysia and
Thailand each has eight workers assigned to anti-tobacco campaign,
while Singapore and Vietnam has seven and six, and Cambodia four.
Quoting figures from the World Health Organization, SEATCA said adult
smokers in ASEAN account for 10 percent of the world’s 1.25 billion
adult smokers.
