Around DC: DC holds diverse city job fair

DC Mayor Adrian Fenty is hosting the 4th annual “DiverseCITY Job Fair” on Friday, September 21, 2007 at National Building Museum. The target audiences include qualified bilingual and limited English proficient (LEP) individuals for public and private sector opportunities. This year’s job fair builds on the successes and model of the Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs’ (OAPIA) Annual DiverseCity Job Fair. OAPIA is working with the Office on Latino Affairs, Office on African Affairs, Office of Human Rights, and Department of Human Resources in an effort to diversify workforces and provide opportunities to underserved, limited English proficient populations in the District.

The Job Fair is part of the Mayor’s continued efforts to ensure high level service delivery to residents in the District and commitment to diversifying the workforce with qualified bilingual professionals. This DiverseCITY Job Fair is expected to have over 150 exhibitors from the District of Columbia and Federal governments, as well as from the non-profit and private sectors. Some of the recruiters that already registered are the U.S. Department of Transportation, Social Security Administration, Coast Guard, DC Public Schools, DC Lottery, Department of Motor Vehicles, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Nationwide Insurance, * Potbelly’s, Grand Hyatt, XM Radio, McDonalds and Tiffany and Co.

Over 700 participants are expected for employment opportunities from the service industry to technical and professional occupations. Some recruiters will also be “hiring on the spot” at the job fair. It is expected that this will be the largest bilingual job fair held to attract Asian and Pacific Islander, Latino, and African individuals in the metropolitan Washington region. Interpretation will be provided for limit English proficient. Sign language will also be provided for persons who are deaf and/or hearing impaired.
