Deausen Grabs Title
DEAUSEN REALTORS closed out a remarkable season by winning the Philippine American (Winter)Basketball League (PABL) championship without a single loss to establish themselves as a legitimate basketball power in the Metro DC area Pinoy community. The league was held at the Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Camp Springs, Maryland.
Deausen , coached by Bong Bulong, was 6-0 going into the championship game promptly proceeded to put the icing on the cake by handily beating the WARRIORS team last April 10, thus completing their domination of the four months long LEAGUE.sponsored by the Sports and Permit Division of the PGC Department of Parks and Planning M-NCPPC under Mr. John Love.
Eight Filipino American teams battled it out for supremacy in the 8-team league which used to attract as many as 14 teams although competitions proved just as intense. The league came under widespread criticism when the referees did nothing to stop a players fight that almost got out of hand last fall. The incident shocked and dismayed the spectators many of whom were parents and relatives who came expecting to have an afternoon of fun.
WARRIORS had to settle for the runner up spot with a respectable 6-1 record while BELTSVILLE finished the league sporting a 4-2 card BULLDAWGS and KINGSTOWNNE had identical 3-4 slates WESTERN UNION registered a 1-5 record and GOODFELLAS brought up the rear with 0-7.
What ails Philippine Basketball? POC president Peping Cojunagco was reportedly fuming mad at the performance of the Philippine National Basketball team preparing for the Southeast Asian Games this November. The RP cagers playing in commercial leagues back home as part of their build up was soundly beaten by the Paranaque Jets led by movie stars Richard Gomez and Antonio Aquintana (A reader jokingly observed that at the level that they are playing the nationals could find the going hard even with local teams Deausen Realtors or FABA kingpin Run-and Gun. Â?Baka matalo pa sila sa dalawang itoÂ?.)
Cojuangco expressed alarm over the debacle of the RP cagers against a team laced with ex-pros and movie stars. The POC chief criticized the selection process, training program, and especially their attitude which leaves a lot to be desired. The prospects for retaining SEAG basketball gold seems to be in jeopardy now, even as RP coach Chot Reyes tried to solidify the RP squadsÂ? lineup by conducting try-outs in Los Angeles for outstanding Fil-Am cagers.
Chot came up with two names: Kelly Williams and Joe Deviance. Both 6Â?6Â?. Williams whose mom is from Cebu is a product of Oakland U, Detroit, a US NCAA Division 1 team and Deviance whose mom is from Negros is from Texas U in El Paso, also an NCAA Division 1 team. Chot attended the NABC coaches convention in St. Louis then to Detroit to observe the PistonÂ?s games and had a one on one session with Larry Brown.
