Tryouts were held last June 18, 2006 to
select the players that will make up the PEEWEE and BANTAM teams that will
compete in the 2ND Filipino American Basketball Association (FBA) Tournament
which will be held in Toronto,
Canada during
the Labor Day weekend in September.
The following players made the cut. Allan
Africa, Sami Altamar, Robert Banez, Gino Bretana, Micah Dabao, Brandon Devera,
Perry Fabi, Marcel Hernandez, Kevin Moreno, Justin Quion, Michael Ramada, Alex
Valera, Tyler Vicente and Jonathan Yatco.
Mendoza said that all Bantam players who showed
up made it. It was another matter in the case of the Peewees. There were so
many diverse talents that the selection committee had a hard time deciding. but
in the end they had to make the decision painful as it were.
FABA indeed is a beehive of activity
these days (as always). The spring summer league involving several divisions in
different age levels are currently going on in different venues around Northern Virginia. The 32 and above Adult League has just
blasted off and they are in deep preparation for the September affair in Toronto. Sponsorships for
the different teams are being vigorously pursued. And to top it all they have
to meet the challenges of hosting next year’s FBA tournament which will be held
here in the Metro DC area for the first time. More power to you Ken and your
group and congratulations!
*Pinoy Controversy Swirls Atop Everest*.
A Filipino adventurer and sportsman by the name of Dale Abenojar has recently
surfaced and created quite a stir among our kababayans when he made the claim
that he was the FIRST FILIPINO to reach the top of the world’s highest mountain
and he says that he has the evidence to back his claim.
Abenojar’s allegations were criticized by
the First Philippine Mount Everest Expedition (FPMEE) which claims that two of
its members Leo Oracion, and Pastor Emata were the first and second Filipinos
to reach the summit of Mt.
Everest on May 17 and 18,
2006 respectively.
Another Filipino, Romeo Garduce also
reached the top of Mt. Everest in a race with Oracion and Emata which
highlighted a seething network war between ABS-CBN who supported the
Oracion-Emata team and GMA-7 who backed Garduce.
FPMEE also questioned the certificate
Abenojar received from the Mountaineering Association of Tibet and the
organization’s credibility as well, claiming that Abenojar purchased the
document in China
anomalously. Pinoy sports fans can only groan in dismay.
